We had the opportunity to attend Pathology Update 2026 at the International Convention Centre in Sydney, hosted by the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA). The turnout was impressive far exceeding expectations and reflected the strength and engagement of the pathology profession across the region.
What stood out immediately was the diversity of expertise in attendance. The event brought together professionals from across the full spectrum of pathology, including anatomical pathology, chemical pathology, clinical forensic medicine, forensic pathology, genetic pathology, haematology, immunopathology, and microbiology.
This breadth highlights how interconnected the field has become, with each discipline playing a vital role in advancing patient care.
One of the most striking aspects of the conference was the depth of collaboration across disciplines. From early-stage discovery through to clinical diagnosis, conversations consistently reinforced how essential pathology is to modern healthcare.
The integration of knowledge across specialties is not just beneficial it’s fundamental to delivering accurate, timely, and impactful medical outcomes.
The exhibition floor featured a strong line-up of companies showcasing the latest technologies and innovations supporting pathology professionals. From advanced diagnostic tools to laboratory equipment, it was clear that the industry continues to push boundaries in both capability and precision.
Attending as a visitor from Versatile Spaces™, I viewed the event through a slightly different lens. While the scientific and diagnostic advancements were impressive, it became increasingly clear that the physical environments supporting this work often lag behind.
Despite rapid progress in science, there remains a significant opportunity to improve how laboratories are designed and managed. High-quality, purpose-built storage solutions are frequently overlooked.
Yet, these elements are critical to enabling efficient workflows, maintaining safety standards, and supporting scalability within pathology environments.
Laboratory performance isn’t driven by technology alone. The way space is organised how materials are stored, accessed, and managed directly impacts productivity and accuracy. Thoughtfully designed storage and infrastructure can reduce inefficiencies, minimise risk, and ultimately support better outcomes for both professionals and patients.
